1980年考入中山大学化学系本科,1984年考取中山大学研究生院,攻读天然有机专业硕士学位。1987年7月获得硕士学位之后留校,任职中山大学生物工程研究中心5年,担任助教、讲师。1992年6月赴美深造,就读于堪薩斯州立大学(Kansas State University),攻读生物化学专业博士。1997年博士毕业后在堪薩斯州立大学先后任博士后研究员、研究助理教授。2002年9月受聘任美国密苏里大学(堪萨斯校区)(University of Missouri - Kansas City)生物科学学院助理教授,2008年提升为副教授,获终身教职。2014年晋升为终身正教授,2013–2017年担任密苏里大学生科院分子生物学与生化系系主任。
2002-2017年连续获得并主持美国国家卫生研究院(NIH)的四项研究课题,总经费超过二百八十多万美元。2008年获得中国国家自然科学基金委海外杰出青年课题,2014年入选湖北省百人计划。担任美国国家卫生研究院(NIH)、美国国家自然科学基金(NSF)评委,中国国家自然科学基金委海外专家评委。担任中国昆虫学会昆虫生理生化与分子生物学专业委员会委员,药剂毒理专业委员会委员,海外中国昆虫学者联合会(OCEA)秘书长、副会长和会长。被聘为Insect Science、Journal of Insect Science、PLoS One、《应用昆虫学报》等杂志的编委和国际多种著名杂志的评委。至今共发表160多篇SCI科学论文,文章累计SCI影响因子超过570。文章被引用8000多次,所发表论文的H-指数(H-index)为46。
